Beard Care Basics: What Every Man Should Know

Growing a beard is easy. Keeping it looking great takes a little know-how.

Growing a beard is the easy part. Keeping it looking great between barber visits takes a little know-how. Whether you've had a beard for years or you're growing one out for the first time, these basics will help you keep it clean, healthy and well-shaped.

1. Wash Your Beard (But Not Too Often)

Beard hair is coarser than head hair and the skin underneath is prone to dryness. Wash your beard 2-3 times per week with a gentle beard wash or a mild shampoo. Avoid regular body soap, it strips natural oils and leads to flaking and itchiness.

2. Condition After Washing

After washing, apply a beard conditioner or a few drops of beard oil while the hair is still slightly damp. This hydrates the hair, softens the texture and helps reduce that wiry, scratchy feeling. Work the oil or balm through the beard with your fingers, reaching the skin underneath.

3. Brush or Comb Daily

A boar bristle brush or a wide-tooth comb helps distribute natural oils, train hairs to grow in the right direction and reduce tangles. Brush your beard daily, in the morning after applying oil or balm, following the natural growth direction.

4. Keep the Edges Clean

The difference between a beard that looks intentional and one that looks neglected is the edges. Keep your cheek lines, neckline and jawline tidy. If you're not confident doing this at home, book a beard lineup at Aria between full trims. It takes just a few minutes and keeps your beard looking sharp.

5. Don't Trim Too Early When Growing Out

If you're growing your beard out, resist the urge to shape it too early. Give it at least 4-6 weeks of growth before any serious trimming. Uneven patches often fill in with time, and cutting too soon can slow your progress.

6. Visit Your Barber for Shaping

Even if you maintain your beard at home between visits, having a professional barber shape your beard every few weeks makes a significant difference. Your barber can define your lines, balance the shape, and trim away split ends to keep the beard looking full and healthy.
